Hare Polish Gallery Row Swatch And Review

Hello my lovelies!  I took a bit of a hiatus for the weekend and I'm back and recharged.  I hope you all had a nice Mother's Day and got to spend time with family.  My brother and nephew were in town so we took a mini food tour of LA, mostly spending time in Koreatown, the westside for some fish tacos, and then to Portos bakery for some cuban sandwiches and sweets.  Not too much sight seeing per se, but we did spend a chunk of time at USC checking out the campus with my nephew so he could get a feel of what campus life was like there.  My college, Rutgers, seems much more grittier than the manicured lawns of USC.  It's the perfect bubble in the middle of chaotic downtown.

Speaking of downtown, Los Angeles' downtown has been booming and undergoing a significant reformation.  It use to be a seedy area that was deserted at night except for unknown illicit activites, but it has since turned a full 180 degrees.  It's now bustling with a young crowd, expansive loft spaces, trendy restaurants and hip lounges  Part of that growth is Gallery Row, a street that has now become a hotbed of beautiful art boutiques and galleries.  Back in my younger years when I had time to spare in that area of town, we would come at night and find live music being performed at some of those galleries, which then later expanded to the infamous once a month Artwalk.  It has now become a community event where live music, food vendors, and galleries collaborate to create a night full of energy and visual beauty.  Aside from the beautiful commissioned gallery art, there is also an abundance of street art found all over downtown, from huge colorful graffiti murals to small quirky stencils in the sidewalk.  You can turn a corner into an alley and then unexpectedly run smack into the most jaw dropping piece of graffiti out of nowhere.  That's probably my favorite thing about downtown.  I often wanted to drive aimlessly through those streets and capture those works on film.  Nowadays being a mom, I don't see that happening any time soon!

From all this Nikole takes inspiration to create a polish called Gallery Row, a muddled dark navy base that has a multitude of equally muddy glitters that manage to come together into a lively creation of color and energy.  There are rust colored circles, fuchsia hexes, green and yellow mini glitters, along with pink and silver squares.  It reminds me of the days when I'd drive through the empty streets of downtown under a clear midnight blue sky, and the pieces of graffiti art whirling by as I passed.   The formula itself was easy to apply, needing only three thin coats for full opacity and a high density of glitter.  I had no trouble with stacking or dragging of glitters, but make sure to allow each coat to fully dry being applying the next.  I finished with a layer of topcoat to smooth and add shine.

In my opinion, this is probably Nikole's best translation of a Los Angeles location into a nail polish - the dark base color does an excellent job of portraying downtown Los Angeles at night with its mysterious and gritty streets, while the colorful mix of glitters bring the viewer straight into the growing art scene that is found within.  This finishes my small swatchathon of the Viva Los Angeles collection, and regrettably I didn't get the last of the collection called Bowl of Roses.  I'll make sure to rectifiy that the next time Nikole has a restock!  Out of all that I swatched, it's hard for me to choose which is my favorite since they're all so beautiful.  I would say Gallery Row is amongst the top two or three or four.  Heck, don't make me choose!  Which was your favorite?

Hare Polish Abbot Kinney Swatch And Review

One of my favorite bloggers and reader, Liz from Lacquer Slacker Liz, asked what my favorite sights of LA are... There's definitely quite a few vistas that are remarkable here in LA, and I always try to bring my guests to see them whenever they visit.  One of my favorites is the Getty Museum located high on top of hill not too far from the beach that affords beautiful views of both the coast and the city.  The Getty itself has beautiful architecture and a stunning garden that makes for a peaceful and tranquil visit.  Another museum I like is the Natural History Museum for its beautiful rose garden.  A favorite pastime of mine is having a picnic amongst the fragrant blooms and listening to the water fountain nearby bubble happily.  I suppose the list could go on and on, but other sights include Santa Monica, Venice beach, Hollywood Blvd at 2am in the morning, the Thai temple in North Hollywood, and of course my culinary favorites in San Gabriel Valley, Westminster, Little Osaka, Koreatown, and Culver City.

Of Hare's Viva Los Angeles collection, Abbot Kinney is probably the most familiar to me.  I've spent quite a few afternoons there wandering along the street and browsing the trendy boutiques and smelling the delicious scents from the restaurants.  The street is constantly evolving with new restaurant openings, cutting edge food trucks, and high end clothing.  There's something incredibly unique about the street, in that it manages to stay cutting edge but still maintains an old town feel.  If you could take the inspiration of this street and turn it into a polish, I would say that Nikole hit it straight on the nail(no pun intended) with the colors she used to create Abbot Kinney.  The grey base represents the street and buildings, and the colorful green hexes, salmon circles, and gold glitters are like the beautiful clothing in the window displays.  The formula of this was a bit sheerer than the previous three I've swatched and I ended up using 4 coats here, finished with a layer of topcoat.

It's been a few months since I've visited Abbot Kinney, but it's one of those places I know I'll return to again soon.  It's one of the few streets in LA that isn't over run with mainstream culture and manages to stay unique.  I hope there's a street like that in every city - do you have a street like this in yours?

Hare Polish Down On The West Coast Swatch And Review

Thursdays are always the hardest day of the week for me.  It's that day of the week which means the week is almost over, but not quite.  I really can't wait until Friday is over!   One of my favorite past times to get the week to past by quicker is shopping, and there are some good coupon deals out there right now.  If you have the Sunday paper, there's another $1 off WnW, and if you combine that with CVS's B2G1 free deal, you've got quite a bargain!  Also, there's a printable Rimmel $1 off coupon on redplum.com, and if you use two at Walgreens during their BOGO 1/2 off, you can get a bottle of nail polish for as low as 25 cents each.
In continuation of the Hare Viva Los Angeles series, I have for you Down On the West Coast, a delicate and feminine soft pink base embedded with large gold and blue flakes.  Flakes are probably one of my favorite add ins for a polish, second only to contrasting shimmers.  They add color and depth in a sophisticated and lighthearted way.  The pretty soft pink is very flattering as well, which is surprising to me because I'm not usually a fan of pinks with my skin tone.  I think it has the right balance of warmth to it that will make it work with most skin tones as well.  I used three coats here with some mild runaway flakes towards the tips.  I finished with a layer of topcoat for added shine and smoothness.

Nikole says she's obsessed with the marbled effect of the flakes, and I have to say, she's made me obsessed as well!  This pink, gold, and blue combination is truly a perfect representation of the best coast(as Nikole describes this), and in a tongue in cheek kind of way, makes me think of the stereotypical suntanned blonde barbies that LA is known for.  Although I'm not one of those, it makes me smile to know that I've got a little LA on my nails when I'm wearing this!

Hare Polish Elysian Fields Swatch And Review

Happy Wednesday!  I can't believe mother's day is right around the corner.  Are you planning anything special for the weekend?  My brother is coming down to visit - I may have to take him sightseeing so I can knock some to-dos off my list!

Today's eye candy from Hare Polish Viva Los Angeles collection is Elysian Fields, a complex dark aqua leaning green base with tiny matte yellow glitters highlighted with a combination of iridescent and gold colored flakies.  This particular combination is probably the least complex of the collection, but it's namesake is best represented with simplicity.  Elysian Fields is a park located right outside Dodger stadium, which is on a hill next to downtown Los Angeles.  Shame on me again, this is another vista that I have not seen myself, other than driving by every day when I was working on that side of town.  It's funny being a resident in an abundant sightseeing city - I always plan to visit the spots but always chalk it up to next weekend.  Doesn't that happen to everyone?  The formula of Elysian fields is easy to apply but low in pigmentation.  I used three thin coats here but maybe I should have used an extra layer or applied it on more thickly.  The density of glitter is perfect, however, and I got the right amount of distribution across the nail.  This is all finished with a layer of topcoat.

Isn't that a gorgeous shade of green?  It's got a touch of teal to it, and iridescent flakies bring forth images of the cloudless clear blue skies that is always present in LA.  The yellow microglitters are like little sunwarmed dandelions sprinkled along the hillside.  The weather here in LA is amazing, always sunny and clear, with the perfect warm but not hot temperature during the day and cooler evenings.  I mentally curse the price of living here in this city, but I know it's worth it for the weather alone.  It's a love-hate relationship, that's for sure!

Hare Polish From The Balcony Of Chateau Marmont Swatch And Review

Happy Tuesday!  Are you hung over from Cinco de Mayo?  If not, hopefully you had some yummy Mexican food to celebrate.

Hooray!  Hare Polish recently released a collection inspired by the city of my home, called Viva Los Angeles.  Upon hearing this, I knew it was a great time to break my mini ban and splurge on the collection.  Living in Los Angeles has its pros and cons, and it's always nice to be reminded of the beauty found within this desert city.  I'll be sharing a swatch of each polish in the collection over the next few posts.

The first polish is From The Balcony Of Chateau Marmont, a pool blue base loaded with pink, white, black, and gold microglitters with a dusting of gold flakie shimmer.  Nikole's inspiration is the pool side view from Chateau Marmont, an experience that I've not yet had the pleasure of experiencing.  I suppose it's never been high on my list of things to do in LA, but after wearing this polish, I'm making a mental note to put it higher on the list. Chateau Marmont is located off of the infamous Sunset Strip, and is well known for its celebrity popularity.  To achieve opacity, I used three coats here and had no issues with balding, glitter stacking, or dragging.  I added extra shine with two layers of topcoat.

I can see pink blooms above the vibrant blue water of the pool, along with the glow of the ever present LA sunlight.  I love that this polish contains unexpected glitters like the tiny black glitters against the blue base.  It's not something I would think to add myself, but along with the other glitters, it comes together to create a harmonious canvas.  There's also an illusion of added length to my nails, and suddenly they seem impossibly long. It might be time to take down some of that length.  In the meantime, I'm looking forward to swatching the rest of these polishes with their beautiful unexpected color combinations.  Its a true representation of LA, which is finding unexpected delicate beauty in a dusty congested desert city.  Stay tuned for more!

Hare Free-Spirit Of The Season Swatch And Review

Hello again, and TGIF!  I'm a little bummed today, the tech that we hired to help me recently put in his two week resignation.  Seems like another job that he had applied previous to ours offered him a better package than we could, and possibly he might like the hospital  setting better. I really like him too, and he was learning everything so fast. Bummer.

To perk things up, I'm continuing with another green mani. This is Hare Polish Free-Spirit Of The Season, a dark emerald green jelly shot through with dazzling gold shimmer and accented with matte purple and fuchsia glitters.  There's also multisized red glitter making it a Christmas themed polish but I thought it would still be appropriate for this week as well.  I used three layers here and although it seemed opaque IRL the camera makes it look more sheer than it is.  Formula was smooth and even for a jelly and not overloaded with glitters. In fact I wish there was a tiny bit more but maybe the fourth coat would solve that.  This is finished with two layers of topcoat to smooth down the glitters.

The matte glitters completely transform this into a polish that can be worn any season, especially St Paddy's day. The complexity of all its components make it a great visual distraction throughout the day. I usually deter myself from overly holiday themed polishes but thankfully this wasn't one of them.  Do you have any that you can wear at any time?

Hare Polish Love You To Pieces Swatch And Review

TGIF!  I have to say, Fridays are so much more sweeter when you've got a kid.  With no time during the week to do anything, Fridays give me hope that I'll be able to actually get something done for myself over the weekend.  Here's hoping that I get a moment to myself!

Who likes a good polish loaded with flakes?  This girl!  I'm totally loving Hare Polish's newest release called Love You To Pieces, a plum jelly with flakes in gold, silver, and purple.  Application was good and I used three coats here.  As with any jelly, there some streaking if you don't take extra care to make sure the layers are applied evenly.  The flakes were easy to control and didn't protrude once on the nail.  I finished with topcoat for extra gloss.

What is it about flakes that make me drool uncontrollably?  The multitude of colors blend together harmoniously into gorgeous pool of purple on the nail.  The individual flakes glint when hit by light, giving off flashes of different colors.  I must say, I'm mighty pleased by this polish.

Hare Polish Perfect Storm Swatch And Review

Happy Humpday!  Is anyone watching the Olympics?  I'm not huge into Olympic sports, but I do enjoy the ice skating events.  I've also heard a lot about the difficulties of Sochi hosting the Olympics as well - are they true?  Some of them sound mind blowing!  I'm curious to know what you heard.

Nikole of Hare polish recently released some "Jackalopes," polishes that didn't quite fit into any particular collection, and I have one of them for you today.  This is Perfect Storm, a dark inky blue jelly crammed with purple, gold, and fuchsia squares and circles, with a sprinkling of microglitter.  I consider this the blue sister to Anemone Gardens.  I used three coats in these pics, and the glitter density was surprising low in respect to Hare's previous releases.  I had minimal stacking of glitter, no dragging, or streaking during application.  It's topcoat thirsty, and I found that my GlitterDaze Super Smooth wasn't enough alone so this warranted coat of Gelous before applying a QDTC.

I couldn't decide which macro to use, so I put both my middle and ring finger in.  I had difficulty capturing the full beautiful effect of this polish because the darkness of the polish did not want to stay in focus with my camera.  I like that this isn't your run of the mill navy glitter bomb that has an underwater feel - instead, the bright pink adds a touch of whimsy.  I've said it before and will say it again, Nikole has a great eye for color and always combines colors in a surprising yet pleasing way.  Bravo!

Hare Polish The Red Room Swatch And Review With Pueen Stamping

Have you heard of qi wireless charging? I'm trying to get my S4 set up so that I can charge it wirelessly at work.  Wires are the last thing I want to deal with on my desk when I have stacks of papers everywhere and qi charging seems so convenient.  I need to find a qi pad for a decent price and if you see one, please let me know!

With Valentine's day quickly coming upon us, I felt Hare Polish The Red Room was a perfect prelude for the holiday.  The Red Room is from the recent Twin Peaks collection, and it's a squishy red jelly with matte white squares, matte black squares and microglitter, along with white flakies and shimmer.  Formula was smooth and easy considering the jelly base, and in contrast with Hare's normal formula of glitter overload, this was less burdened with glitter and I felt after two coats that the glitter was too sparse despite the base being sufficiently opaque.  I was happy with the amount of glitter after the third coat, and after drying to a satin finish, I used GlitterDaze Super Smooth to add shine and smooth out the bumps.

I ordered the newest set of Pueen plates the other day and felt that it would be a great opportunity to try them out.  I like these plates because the patterns fill up the entire plate, similar to MoYou UK plates, but instead of rectangle plates, these are the standard small round plates.  I used my standard WnW black creme and found that the images didn't transfer as smoothly compared to my other plates. Hopefully its a one time fluke.  The image on my ring finger didn't transfer well at all - after getting onto my stamper I had to use acetone to clean the image up. It dried during that time so I had to make a decal or if it.  Not cool.

Despite all the hassle I do like the way it turned out.  The Red Room works as the perfect background red for the hearts in the Pueen image. I'm not huge into celebrating Valentines but I think the black accent makes it not too corny valentines-y. Are you going to do any  special nail art for the upcoming occasion?
